Description

Land Farm House is a farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, with the lower end rebuilt in the early 17th century. A datestone on the west gable end reads '1629' and "H.M.overB". The house is constructed of stone rubble and features a thatched roof with gabled ends. It has a left-hand gabled wing to the northeast, creating an L-shaped plan. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range, with three and four-light ovolo moulded stone mullion windows that include hood moulds. There is a doorway to the left of centre with a modern thatched porch. An external stone chimney stack with set-offs is located to the left, and a window has been inserted nearby. A brick chimney stack is positioned over the west gable end. The northeast wing includes an eyebrow dormer, and there is an oven projecting at the west end. A circa 18th-century wing is located at the rear (south).

Inside, a plank and muntin screen to the cross passage has been replaced with a modern copy. There is an open fireplace at the lower (west) end, featuring a heavy timber bressummer that continues over an arched doorway to the side. A stone arched opening leads to the oven inside the fireplace. Land Farm House is notable as the birthplace of Thomas Wakley, who lived from 1795 to 1862. He was a surgeon and medical reformer, the founder of 'The Lancet', and served as MP for Finsbury from 1835 to 1852.
