Description
SY 18 NE BRANSCOMBE BRANSCOMBE
7/32 Group of 3 Hurley Memorials - approximately 7 metres south- east of the chancel of the Church of St Winifred GV II 3 churchyard monuments in memory of members of the Hurley family. All are mid C18 and Beerstone ashlar. A chest tomb is flanked by headstones, 1 to north and 1 to south. The northern headstone stands approximately 700 millimetres high and has a shaped head (part has broken off). The front has a moulded frame and the head has a carved cherubs head flanked by crossbones and a carved open book containing a Biblical quotation. The main inscription is Roman serif upper and lower case lettering and records the death of Sarah Hurley in 1765. The southern headstone is leaning. If upright it would be approximately 600 millimetres high. It is similar but simpler than the northern headstone and the inscription is illegible. The chest tomb has plain sides and base and a soffit-moulded flat lid and the south side includes an interesting epithet. It records the death of John Hurley in 1755. He was a customs officer and died by falling from a cliff whilst trying to extinguish a smugglers beacon.
