Description

Courtbrook Farmhouse is a farmhouse that underwent remodelling in 1718, although it is based on an older structure. It features roughcast cob with stone footings and a hipped slate roof. Originally, it had a three-room, through-passage layout with a rear wing at the service end. The service end, located to the left of the passage, is heated by an external end stack, while the hall is heated by what was originally an external rear lateral stack. The inner room likely remained unheated until an internal end stack was added in the 19th or 20th century. The rear wing also has an end stack, and all stacks have brick shafts, with the service-end stack being plastered.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a front elevation with a regular four-window arrangement. All windows are 19th-century, 20-pane horned sashes, but the openings likely date back to the 1718 remodelling. There is one window for each of the three ground-floor rooms, and a wide doorway leads to the passage. The canopy over the doorway appears to be early 19th century, featuring a cornice, modillions, triglyphs, and three small plaster paterae, all supported by plain posts with simple capitals. Above the porch, there is a datestone inscribed 'PMT 1718', which was originally placed at the eaves level.

On the left-hand elevation, the end stack is notably wide, and the wing has two and three-light casement windows, along with a 19th-century doorway that has a canopy on shaped brackets. The rear of the house has been largely obscured by 20th-century additions covered by a corrugated asbestos roof. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that the roof timbers are not visible in the upper rooms.
