Description
Pound Living is a detached house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations and additions made in the early 18th century. The building is constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings and features a gabled-end asphalted slate roof. Originally, it had a two-room layout with a central through-passage, and a later wing was added to the rear of the right-hand room. Both rooms are heated by internal end stacks, and a newel stair-turret is located at the rear of the left-hand room. The house has two storeys and a front elevation with a four-window range, including one two-light and three three-light casement windows on the first floor, with their lintels at eaves level. There are three-light casement windows on either side of a simple porch that has a panelled front door. The right-hand elevation features 20th-century casement windows. At the rear, there is a brick lean-to with a two-light casement window above.
Inside, the right-hand room has an end fireplace with a chamfered lintel that has step stops, a deeply chamfered cross ceiling beam with eroded stops, and a half-beam above the fireplace with run-out stops. The partition between this room and the passage extends through both storeys. The left-hand room features a chamfered cross ceiling beam with ovolo moulding and no stops, as well as early 18th-century panelled doors, including one with attractive fielded panels that is now set in the rear lean-to but was originally located at the back of the passage. The first floor contains early panelled doors, including double doors to a cupboard with shouldered fielded panels, drawers below, and a cyma recta cornice, possibly from the late 17th or very early 18th century. There is also one planked door with H L hinges. The roof, which is not accessible, has two jointed crucks with large straight upper blades.
