Description
The gateway and boundary walls adjoining the south of Manor Lodge in Upottery date from around 1850 and were formerly part of Upottery Manor, which has since been demolished. The gate posts are made of flint rubble with limestone ashlar dressings. They are square in shape with small chamfers on the corners and topped with pyramid caps. The original ornate wrought iron double gates feature decorative scrollwork and an ornamental crest that rises towards the center. The gateway is set back from the road. On the left (south) side, a low flint rubble quadrant wall curves forward and then runs southward alongside the road, forming the boundary between the road and the Manor grounds. This gateway and boundary wall are part of a group of attractive listed buildings in the village of Upottery, most of which were built in the 19th century by Lord Sidmouth.
