Description

The Helman headstone, located approximately 4 metres south of the Rolle Mausoleum, is a Grade II listed structure dated 1778 in memory of Thomas and Mary Helman. This headstone is made of limestone and features a broad upright slab that stands about 1.2 metres high, with a shaped head and a rebated frame. At the top, there is a carving of a cherub's head above a ribbon that bears a Biblical quote. Below this, a line is cut to depict two adjacent round-headed tablets, each with small architectural imposts. The inscriptions on these tablets include the first word in gothic lettering adorned with scrolls and flourishes, while the remainder uses Roman serif upper and lower case lettering to record the deaths of Thomas and Mary Helman, both of whom died in 1778. An elegy is inscribed across the bottom of the headstone.
