Description

The Cole headstone, dated 1841, is located approximately 3 metres north of the aisle of the Church of St Mary in Upottery. This Grade II listed headstone commemorates Thomas and Hannah Cole and is made of hamstone. It features an upright, round-headed slab that stands about 2 metres high. The top of the headstone is adorned with a carved winged cherub's head set within a scalloped frame. Below this, the inscription is presented in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering with italics, arranged in two columns. The inscription records the deaths of Thomas Cole in 1841 and his wife Hannah in 1810, along with a poem.
