Description

The churchyard south gate and adjoining churchyard walls were built in 1831, although parts of the walls may be older. They are located at the Church of St Mary, which is situated on elevated ground above the village green. The gateway features a wide flight of five granite steps, flanked by stone rubble retaining walls. These walls have weathered granite ashlar coping that includes a series of ramps leading down to heavy granite terminal piers, which are slightly tapering cylinders topped with semi-circular caps.

The gate posts are made of granite and volcanic ashlar, square in section with channeled rustication, and feature projecting caps with large ball finials. Each post has a plaque on the front, both dated 1831 and displaying the initials of that year's church wardens, HR on the left and HD on the right. The gates are likely from the same period, with a top rail that drops towards the center and rails adorned with large spear heads. A wrought iron overthrow, which supports a lamp, is dated 1911.

On either side of the gate are the churchyard walls, which are tall from the outside as they retain the terrace. These walls are constructed of local stone rubble with volcanic ashlar rounded coping and are supported by a regular series of pilaster buttresses, along with one large buttress that has weathered offsets.
