Description
Lower Lodge is an estate lodge, likely built in 1838, as indicated by the date in Roman numerals on a plaque above the entrance. It was constructed for Edward Marlwood Elton and is located at one of the former entrances to Widworthy Court. The building features coursed and squared stone made of flint, with limestone ashlar dressings, and has a hipped slate roof behind a parapet, topped with a brick ridge stack. It has a square plan with a later 19th-century lean-to extension at the rear and is a single-storey structure.
The façade has two windows and follows a classical style, featuring Tuscan columns in antis at the portico, which is flanked by tall margin-pane casements set within ashlar architraves that have bracketed cornices. Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have a simple stone fireplace, barrel-vaulted plaster ceilings, and original joinery, including panelled doors and shutters. This lodge is a fine example of classical estate architecture. The house and park were designed by George Repton, and it is possible that original drawings may still exist in the RIBA Library in London.
