Description
This is a chest tomb located approximately 6 metres east of the vestry of the Church of St Mary in Upottery. It dates from the late 17th century or 18th century and is made of hamstone. The tomb has a rectangular shape and rests on a moulded plinth. Its lid is soffit-moulded and features a low-pitched ridge on top. The sides of the tomb have rectangular panels with bead-moulded surrounds, with two panels on the long sides and one on each end. The west end panel and the western panel on the south side are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, but the inscriptions are mostly illegible except in perfect lighting conditions. However, part of the inscription on the south side indicates "Martha, wife of Nicholas."
