Description

The Braddick headstone, dated 1673, is located approximately 2.5 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Winifred in Branscombe. This headstone is made of Beerstone ashlar and features an upright square-headed slab that stands about 550 millimetres high. The front of the headstone is inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, predominantly in capitals. It commemorates the death of Joseph Braddick in 1673, with a charming epitaph noting that he died suddenly while shearing sheep, suggesting that death treated him as abruptly as he treated his sheep.
