Description
Lower Lodge, including the flint walls at the entrance to the drive to Combe House, is a lodge built in the early 19th century. It underwent reglazing in the late 20th century. The building is colourwashed and rendered, featuring slate roofs with deep eaves and an ornamental brick cornice beneath the eaves and verges. There is a rendered stack with paired, diagonally-set shafts and ornamental brick cornices. The flint rubble walls flank the entrance to the drive.
The lodge is situated within the boundary wall of the park of Combe House, at the Gittisham entrance. It is a small, single-storey structure with a rectangular main block that faces the drive, flanked by left and right wings at right angles, and an outshut to the left. The entrance to the drive is marked by curved walls on either side and square section gate-piers, which are included in the listing.
The exterior features modest Tudor details. There is an open gabled porch on the side facing the drive, with segmental arched openings on three sides and diagonal boarding in the gable. The original panelled front door dates from the 19th century. The right side, facing the road through the village, has a four-light casement window with a hoodmould, although the patterned panes have been replaced with plain glazing. A similar two-light window is found in the gable end of the right wing. The left side of the main block also has a two-light window, and there is another in the front wall of the left-hand outshut, which has a lean-to roof. The flint rubble walls curve inward towards the gate-piers, which are topped with vases. The interior has not been inspected.
