Description

Michell's is a farmhouse that has been divided into three cottages, dating from the early 17th century and modernized in the 20th century after a fire. The right end, No. 3, is likely a converted outbuilding. The building is colourwashed and rendered, probably made of flint rubble, with a slate roof that has gables at both ends. There is a projecting left end stack with ashlar Beerstone set-offs and two axial stacks, with the right-hand stack likely being the original right end stack of the range.

The plan consists of a single depth range, with the left and center sections probably originally forming a three-room and passage plan house, while the lower end to the right has two rear wings at right angles to the main range. The interior of No. 1 was inspected and is thoroughly modernized, while the other two cottages are reported to lack exposed carpentry. No. 3 is said to be brick and a converted outbuilding.

The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical seven-window front. There is a 20th-century gabled porch for No. 2, which has an outer doorway on the left return and an inner door with a moulded 17th-century timber doorframe, possibly the original front entrance to the cross passage. Nos. 1 and 2 have notable 17th-century stone mullioned windows with ovolo-moulded mullions and hoodmoulds on the ground floor, including two three-light windows and two four-light windows, along with one three-light window. A fourth ground floor mullioned window has been truncated by the porch to No. 3, which features four first floor 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars and one smaller ground floor casement to the right.

The interior of No. 1 has been modernized, and the first floor ceiling timbers are reported to be from the 20th century. The roof is also said to be a replacement from the 20th century following the fire. The stone mullioned windows are an unusual survival and contribute to the building's exterior appeal.
