Description

The Wheaton chest tomb, dated 1579, is located adjacent to the east end of the chancel of the Church of St Winifred in Branscombe. This chest tomb commemorates Ellis Wheaton and is made of Beerstone ashlar. It features two panels on each side, a hollow-chamfered base, and a soffit-moulded flat lid. The south side is inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of Ellis Wheaton in 1579. Additionally, the east end has a secondary inscription in Roman serif capitals in memory of Lewes French, who died in 1667.
