Description

Kite's Cottage is a house dating to around 1500, originally built as a hall house and with a floor inserted later. It is constructed of plastered cob or stone rubble, with a thatched roof featuring hipped and gabled ends. The house is two storeys high with a three or four-window front. The windows are mostly 18th, 19th, and 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. A doorway is located to the left of the centre, leading to a cross passage, and is sheltered by a stone rubble porch with a thatched roof. Brick chimney stacks rise from the ridge. The left-hand end (south) was once an outbuilding. A short rear wing, which probably served as a bakehouse and has a stack in its gable end, is also present. Inside, the house features one jointed cruck truss and one true cruck truss, with a hip cruck at the north end . There are stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A central fireplace has chamfered lintels and jambs, and there is another open fireplace in the rear bakehouse room. The building has group value due to its historical and architectural significance.
