Description
The lych gate, located approximately 12 metres south-west of the Church of St Mary, dates from around 1850 and is likely designed by J Hayward. It is constructed from local pinky-brown conglomerate sandstone, featuring lightly-tooled rusticated grey limestone ashlar quoins and cream-coloured sandstone detailing. The roof is covered with red tiles and has fleur-de-lys crested ridge tiles.
Both sides of the gate are identical, each featuring wide 2-centred chamfered arches. The ends are buttressed and have weathered offsets. At the top of each arch, there are circular medallions with moulded frames that contain fleuree crosses in bas relief. A moulded cornice with ballflower enrichment runs along the top. The roof is hipped at both ends.
The lych gate includes timber double gates that are panelled with diagonal planks below the lockrail. Above the lockrail, the gates have vertical struts with chamfered edges, and the top rail is cut to form ogee arches over the gaps. The top rail also features a cast iron crest of fleur-de-lys.
