Description

The coffin stone, dating from the medieval period, is located approximately 2 metres south of the nave of the Church of St Winifred in Branscombe. Made of Beerstone ashlar, this stone coffin is positioned on its side and lacks a lid. The interior is shaped to accommodate a corpse, notably one of considerable height. Interestingly, this coffin does not originally belong to the churchyard; it was discovered alongside Weston Road in 1790 and subsequently relocated to its current position. The site is indicated on large scale Ordnance Survey maps.
