Description

Cheriton Farmhouse is a late 17th or 18th century farmhouse, remodelled in the mid 19th century. The walls are plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with the front rebuilt in Flemish bond brick. The stacks are stone and brick, topped with 19th-century brick. The thatch roof is gabled at the north end and hipped at the south end. The farmhouse is built down a hillslope with a 3-room plan, including a large kitchen at the south end and a parlour at the north end. An axial stack provides back-to-back fireplaces between the dining room and parlour, with an entrance lobby (or widened passage) and a main staircase positioned between the parlour and dining room. The front is irregular, featuring 4-window arrangements of 19th-century casements with glazing bars, those on the ground floor with low segmental brick arches. A part-glazed 19th-century 6-panel door is located left of centre, protected by a contemporary flat hood with shaped timber brackets. The interior largely reflects the mid-19th century modernisation, with most of the joinery dating from that time, though a chamfered axial beam in the dining room suggests an earlier structure. The roof was not inspected, but may be earlier. Cheriton Farmhouse has undergone little modernisation since the mid 19th century.
