Description
The front garden walls located approximately 2 metres west and south of Pencepool Farmhouse are designated as a Grade II listed structure. These garden boundary walls consist of two sections, with part likely dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, while the remainder is from the 19th century. The older section is made of dressed blocks of hard local sandstone arranged in courses, while the newer section is constructed from local stone rubble.
The walls enclose the front garden of Pencepool Farmhouse on the north-west and south-west sides. The north-west wall, which faces the lane, is primarily from the late 16th to early 17th century. It is tall and features a projecting cornice and low rounded coping. At the left end, where it meets the barns, the wall slopes down to a lower section made of rubble from the 19th century. The right end includes a square terminal pier, and slightly right of centre, there is a section that juts forward, featuring a doorway with a 2-centred, almost round-headed arch, complete with projecting imposts and a keystone.
Behind the terminal pier on the right end, the wall continues along the south-west side of the front garden as a low rubble wall from the 19th century. These front garden walls are part of a group of traditional Devon buildings that contribute to the charm of the village of Plymtree.
