Description

PLYMTREE PLYMTREE ST 00 SE 3/154 Front garden walls approximately 2 metres west and south of Pencepool 6.10.87 Farmhouse GV II

Garden boundary walls. Part is probably late C16 - early C17, the rest is C19. The older section is of dressed blocks of hard local sandstone laid to courses, the rest is local stone rubble. These walls bound the front garden of Pencepool Farmhouse (q.v) on the north-west and south-west sides. The north-west side faces onto the lane and most of this is late C16 - early C17. It is tall with a projecting cornice and low rounded coping. Towards the left end (where it meets the barns (q.v) ) it ramps down to a lower section built of rubble in tne C19. At the right end is a square section terminal pier. Right of centre a section brakes forward very slightly and includes a doorway. It is a 2-centred, almost round-headed arch with projecting imposts and keystone. Behind the terminal pier at the right end the wall returns along the south-west side of the front garden; this is a low rubble wall built in the C19. These front garden walls of Pencepool Farmhouse (q.v) form part of a group of traditional Devon buildings that make up the attractive village of Plymtree.
