Description

Rose Cottage and Marigold Cottage are two adjoining cottages, likely built in the late 18th century. They are constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble or brick stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and feature a thatched roof. The L-shaped building contains two cottages, each with a two-room plan. The main block faces south and has three rooms, with one room extending to the rear of the left (western) end. Rose Cottage occupies the left end, consisting of the end room and the room behind it. The rear room has a projecting lateral stack on the inner side, while another axial stack in the party wall serves the fireplaces in the front room of Rose Cottage and the adjoining room of Marigold Cottage. The right room of Marigold Cottage has an end stack. The cottages are two storeys high and feature a regular but not symmetrical four-window front. Rose Cottage has one window at the left end with 19th-century casements that include glazing bars, while Marigold Cottage has three similar windows that are 20th-century replacements, with the ground floor windows featuring 20th-century shutters. Both cottages have 20th-century doors, and the door to Marigold Cottage is set beneath an open porch with a hipped thatch roof. The roof is hipped at each end, and the rear block is gable-ended. The interiors were not available for inspection at the time of the survey.
