Description
The forecourt walls and gates, located to the east and approximately 25 metres north of Venn Ottery Barton, date from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with some repairs from the 19th and 20th centuries. The gates are likely from around 1810. The walls are constructed of English bond brick and are relatively tall, enclosing a large forecourt on the north, south, and eastern sides. The south-east corner features a contemporary pavilion, which is now part of Garden Cottage, while the gateway is situated at the northern end of the east side. This gateway has plain square piers that slightly project from the main wall, with concave quadrant walls that curve into plain brick gate piers containing double gates. The gates are designed with spear-headed rails, a double lock bar with circular elements, and diagonal crosses filling the spaces between the rails below. The farmhouse, pavilion, and forecourt walls together create a picturesque group, sharing striking similarities with the arrangement at nearby Elliots Farm.
