Description

Garden Cottage, approximately 45 metres east of Venn Ottery Barton, is a building with a history spanning the late 17th and early 18th centuries, with an enlargement dating to around 1970. Originally a pavilion within the forecourt of Venn Ottery Barton, it now functions as a cottage. The original pavilion is constructed of exposed brick in a random bond, which tends towards English bond, with a slate roof, formerly thatched. The later cottage extension uses plastered brick or concrete blocks, also with a slate roof. The pavilion comprises a tall, square room situated above a basement, now used as a service room, and a single-story, one-room extension on the west side. A rear stack is located on the southern side. The northern and eastern sides of the pavilion feature tall windows with segmental heads, now fitted with replacement mullion-and-upper-transom windows containing glazing bars. The basement window was enlarged around 1970. Doorways were presumably reused in the cottage extension. The roof is hipped on all sides. The cottage section has three 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars to the north, and two further windows with a contemporary door on the south side, with a gable-ended roof. The pavilion, forecourt walls, and farmhouses nearby form a group within a picturesque setting. There are notable similarities with Elliots Farmhouse, which also features contemporary forecourt walls and a similar pavilion.
