Description
The Bowles comprises two gatepiers located at the junction of the B3181 and the lane to Poltimore, approximately 100 metres south of New Lodge. These gatepiers date from 1681 and are made of granite. They were resited when the road was widened, and the caps likely belong to another pair of piers. The front panels of the uprights feature a dated left panel from 1681, which includes a medallion with a heraldic head, while the right panel, which is not dated, has a medallion containing a chevron. Both gatepiers support large capstones with concave mouldings, topped with a ball. These structures mark one of the entrances to the former Poltimore estate of the Bampfields and are noted for the quality of their 17th-century carving.
