Description
No 52 is a house located on High Street in Corsham, dating from the early to mid 18th century. It is constructed of painted ashlar and features a stone tiled roof. The building has two storeys, with quoin pilasters that extend full height on the left side and to the first floor only on the right. The coved eaves cornice breaks forward at angles and over keystones of three irregularly spaced first floor windows, which are framed in moulded segmental-headed architraves. The outer windows are twelve-pane sashes, while the centre is blank, and all have moulded sills.
On the ground floor, there is a 44-pane shop window with a quoin pilaster to the right, and a door in a flush moulded surround with a moulded course above at the right end. At the rear, there is a wing with an east end stack and a lower range beyond. Internal evidence suggests that the roof was raised, indicating a refronting of an earlier range. The property was formerly accessed through a door that led to a passage, and the shop was double fronted. It is mentioned in the will of J. Rogers from 1761.
