Description
Old Town Cross is a town cross located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Sampson, dating from the 14th century. It is made of limestone and features an octagonal base with quatrefoil panels. The shaft is also octagonal and supports an elaborate carved head, which includes elongated canopies with figures on corbels. Originally, the cross stood at the High Street crossroads until around 1817-1820, when it was moved to its current location, although it no longer has its stepped base. The cross is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Wilts No. 656).
