Description
36 and 37 High Street is an early 18th-century building fronting an older structure. It is three stories tall and constructed of brick, featuring painted stone or stucco rusticated quoins, window surrounds, and a central bay. The first floor has an entablature over the windows and a moulded bracketed cornice, topped with an old tile roof. The central bay slightly projects on the first and second floors, adorned with Doric pilasters on the first floor and Ionic pilasters on the second, which flank arched windows on each floor. These windows are set in an architrave surround with a carved mask keystone, and rustications are present between the pilasters. An entablature runs across the front at each level, breaking around the central bay, which is crowned with a pediment decorated with a coat of arms and swags. There are two segmental-headed windows with keystones on each side of the bay. The ground floor has been altered but retains a six-panel central door. Inside, there is a 17th-century staircase with turned balusters. Nos 30 to 38 High Street form a group with this building.
