Description

Whitbourne Springs Farmhouse is a late 16th-century farmhouse that has been converted into a detached house. It features rendered timber-framing and a tiled roof with groups of diagonally-set brick stacks. The layout includes a through passage leading to the rear of the right stack and consists of three cells. The building is single-storey with an attic and has five windows and three gables.

The entrance is marked by a six-panelled door set in a stone gabled porch to the right of the center. To the right of the door, there is a 2-light leaded casement window, while to the left, there are two 3-light casements and a 12-pane sash window. On the first floor, there are three full gabled dormers on the left with 4-light leaded casements, and two 3-light casements on the right. The left side of the building has a 2-light leaded casement window on the ground floor.

At the rear, there are 19th and 20th-century two and 3-light casements and a glazed door, along with 2-light casements on the first floor and raking 20th-century dormers on the right-hand lean-to extension. Inside, the farmhouse features deeply chamfered beams with stepped stops. The room to the right of the passage has an open fireplace with a cambered lintel set on chamfered stone jambs, and a planked door with strap hinges in an ovolo-moulded architrave. The kitchen remains in its original position at the east end. The middle room contains an 18th-century corner cupboard with shaped shelves and a round arch with a keystone. The first floor is said to have a blocked stone fireplace in the east bedroom and retains original roof timbers. The timber-framing, characterized by square panels and studding, particularly at the east end, was exposed during renovations in 1978.
