Description
The Singing Theatre is a theatre completed in 1895, located in the Larmer Grounds. It features a timber frame clad in matchboarding and has a galvanised sheet roof. The building has a classical Roman plan with three doors leading onto the proscenium from the rear and includes an exedra in classical style. It is a single-storey structure with a semi-circular proscenium arch that has moulded imposts and an extrados leading to the stage, which is decorated with a painting of classical ruins that differs from the image shown in a photograph from 1900. The proscenium arch is framed by fluted Corinthian pilasters that rise to an entablature. The Singing Theatre is part of a series of structures built around 1880 at Larmer Grounds for General Pitt Rivers, reflecting his belief that education should be connected to entertainment.
