Description

Nos 3 and 4 Market Street in Bradford-on-Avon were originally built as a police station and offices as part of the design for the Town Hall by Thomas Fuller of Bath, constructed between 1854 and 1855. The building is made of limestone ashlar and features a hipped Welsh slate roof with stone stacks. It has a rectangular plan with rear stair turrets and stands three storeys high with a symmetrical four-window range. Designed in a Free Domestic Tudor style, it includes scrolled inscriptions above arched doorways that read "POLICE AND SUPERINTENDENT," with decorative strap hinges on the plank doors. The windows are chamfered, with mullions and transoms, consisting of three lights on the first floor and two lights on the ground and top storeys, the latter interrupting a cornice that continues to the former town hall. The outer windows have nowy-headed pediments and are topped by a parapet that returns to the side elevations and ramps up to the stacks. The sides and rear of the building have similar window arrangements, with hipped roofs over the two stair turrets at the back. The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of a significant architectural composition by Fuller and occupies an important position in the town center.
