Description
The memorial to the 1st Training Battalion of the Australian Imperial Forces is located in the southern part of Durrington Cemetery. This memorial, made of red Scottish granite, stands approximately 4.5 meters high and features an obelisk that is square in shape, set on a large rectangular base. The north side of the obelisk displays a shield, and the stone blocks are rough-hewn.
Each face of the base has rectangular polished granite panels that contain inscriptions in gilded incised lettering. The main dedicatory inscription on the north-facing panel reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THE/ FIRST TRAINING BATT./ AUSTRALIAN/ IMPERIAL FORCES/ WHO DIED/ ON ACTIVE SERVICE/ AT LARK HILL."
The south-facing panel states: "GREATER LOVE/ HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN/ LAY DOWN/ HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS." The west-facing panel lists the names of the men who died, including their service numbers, rank, battalion, and date of death. Lastly, the inscription on the east-facing panel, positioned under a Latin cross, reads: "ERECTED BY THEIR/ COMRADES/ 1917."
