Description

Cruck Cottage is a detached cottage dating back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th century and a re-roofing in the 1970s. It is constructed with square-panelled timber framing on full cruck trusses, with rendered infill between the timbers and a Welsh slate roof. A brick stack is located on the east gable end. The cottage has a gable end facing the road, and is two bays wide. It is single-storey with an attic, having three windows. A planked door is positioned centrally on the south side, with a two-light casement window to the left and two windows to the right. There are two 20th-century attic dormers. A single-storey extension is attached to the right return, while the left return is blank. The rear elevation includes a single-light casement window to the right, and a blocked two-light wood mullioned window in the centre, along with 20th-century attic dormers.

The interior features a timber fireplace at the east end with chamfered jambs and a chamfered cambered lintel, likely inserted together with deep chamfered beams with run-out stops to the first floor, supported on short jowled posts. A timber-framed cross frame is located in the middle of the cottage. Much of the original roof timbers were destroyed in a 1970s fire, meaning any evidence of an open roof with smoke-blackening is now absent.
