Description
Amesbury War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary and St Melor, which is a Grade I listed building, and is near several other designated heritage assets. The memorial features a tall Latin cross made of Chilmark stone, rising from a square pedestal that stands on a square, four-stepped base.
On the plinth, there are metal plaques that list the names of those who fell in both World Wars. The plaque for the First World War states, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND/ IN EVERLASTING MEMORY/ OF THE AMESBURY MEN WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (32 NAMES)." The plaque for the Second World War reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND/ IN EVERLASTING MEMORY/ OF THE AMESBURY MEN AND/ WOMEN WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945./ (31 NAMES)."
