Description
St Peter's and St Mary's Junior School was established in 1904, with the foundation stone laid by the Marquess of Ailesbury. The architects were T B Silcock and S S Reay. The building is constructed of red brick and features a pitched tile roof. It has two storeys and a moulded wooden eaves cornice. The end gables and the slightly projecting central bay are topped with prominent modillioned pediments. The central bay contains a range of mullioned and transomed windows with lead glazing bars. Each of the two flanking bays has a single oeuil de boeuf set within elegant moulded brick cartouches.
Below these bays are one-storey entrance extensions, each featuring moulded stone cornices and parapets. Each entrance has a double door with fielded panelling in ashlar surrounds, which consist of a moulded architrave and two Roman Doric three-quarter columns supporting a full entablature and pediment, with "Boys" and "Girls" carved in relief and surrounded by oak leaves. Each extension also includes a mullion and transom window with lead glazing bars.
The roof is topped by an octagonal lantern on a square tile-hung base, with each side featuring a semi-circular louvred arch with a keystone and moulded voussoirs. At the corners, there are four Tuscan columns supporting an entablature with modillioned cornices, along with four elaborate wooden urns and an ogival lead cap.
