Description
Bridge House is a house with probable origins in the 16th century, which underwent extensive restoration and alterations in 1923, as indicated by the date on the rainwater heads. The building is constructed of squared and coursed rubble with some limewash, featuring ashlar dressings around the windows, some wooden lintels, and a steeply gabled stone slate roof. The right-hand end stack has been rebuilt in stone, while the left-hand stack is made of brick.
The house consists of two ranges set at right angles to the bridge and follows the road line uphill, with a 1923 wing at the rear creating an irregular T-shaped plan. The main part of the house, which is closest to the bridge, has two storeys and an attic, and it comprises four bays. The fenestration is scattered, including three 3-light small leaded pane casements, a 1923 central two-storey canted bay with chamfered mullions, and one similar cross-mullion window to the left with a hoodmould, both featuring small leaded pane casements. To the right, there is a 1923 doorway with side shafts, a cusped arch, a bracketed hood, and a plank door. The roof has three hipped dormers, one of which is set through the eaves line.
Attached to the main house is a former cottage, now serving as a service range, which is built from similar materials and features similar fenestration. The end section of this range has an Arts and Crafts circular chimney. The rear wing from 1923 includes ovolo mullions and an additional canted bay at the south end. The interior has not been inspected but is reputed to lack original details.
