Description

Hungerford Chantry is a Grade II* listed building located in The Close, dating back to the mid to late 18th century. The original house on this site was the residence of Constantine de Middeval, who died in 1294, and it was later occupied by Cathedral Choristers. Lord Hungerford assigned it as a Chantry upon his death in 1459, with the first reference to the present structure occurring in 1794.

This two-storey building with an attic is constructed of brick and features a raised string course over the first-floor windows. It has a plain parapet with stone coping and an old tile roof. The façade includes five windows with moulded frames on the first floor, four similar windows on the ground floor, and a central six-panel door surrounded by an architrave, a plain frieze, a moulded dentilled cornice, and a pediment.

Inside, there is a notable staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail, along with a newel turning service stair at the rear. The ground floor west front room features 17th or 18th-century panelling that reaches from floor to ceiling, a small dentil cornice, and fluted pilasters. The fireplace in this room has a four-centred stone arch with chamfered edges, possibly remnants of the original building. An outhouse at the rear contains a section of linen-fold panelling, and the attic hall has late 17th or early 18th-century panelling.

All the listed buildings in The Close form an outstanding group.
