Description

The former hangar located at the northeast corner of a former airfield was built in 1916 for the servicing and repair of aircraft. It features a timber frame with corrugated iron cladding and a curved, boarded roof covered in tarred roofing felt. The hangar has a rectangular plan with full-width gable end openings, lean-to annexes, and a brick chimney for a semi-sunk boiler house on the north side. There are small-paned iron windows, with 15 on each side, set high up. The gable ends are finished with timber boarding, and there are wide iron gantries for sliding doors, which are later 20th-century replacements. The west end retains its original structure, while the east end has been refronted in later 20th-century brick with two large doors.

Inside, the roof form is similar to that of the General Service Flight Sheds. Historically, the Aeroplane Repair Section specialized in aircraft repair and servicing, making this hangar the most complete surviving example of an ARS shed in Britain. It is associated with two General Service Flight Sheds located on the north side of the former airfield, representing a unique survival of a First World War Royal Flying Corps airfield that housed and serviced a squadron of aircraft. Yatesbury opened in November 1916 as a Training Depot Station, featuring two separate aerodromes for training Royal Flying Corps reserve squadrons.
