Description
The farm buildings located to the northeast and northwest of Elberry Farmhouse date from the mid-19th century and are constructed from Devonian limestone rubble with slated roofs. The layout appears to be planned, featuring two rectangular enclosed courtyards with a bank barn situated between them. The front courtyard includes lofted cattle sheds and stables, with a round house positioned behind the barn. The rear courtyard consists of two ranges of single-storeyed buildings, likely used as calf houses, and features both one and two-storey structures. These buildings are simple yet well-preserved, with openings that have arches made of stone voussoirs. Each courtyard has its own entrance from Elberry Lane, marked by semicircular gate piers, although the left pier in the rear yard has been removed; however, the original gate with spear-head uprights remains intact. Additionally, the rear yard has a second gate opposite the first, located in the southwest wall, which also features semicircular piers. This farmstead, along with its farmhouse and cart shed, represents an interesting example of a planned layout that is not commonly found in Devon, especially in such good condition. It is situated on a public path near Broadsands Beach and is clearly visible from Broadsands Road.
