Description

Clarence Street School is a board school built in 1895 for the Swindon School Board, currently used as council offices. The building features red brick with stone dressings and has a plain tile roof adorned with elaborate gables. It has brick axial and gable end stacks with stone strings and cornices.

The school has a large rectangular plan with projecting corners and small entrances on the north and south sides. The first-floor classrooms are open to the roof and are designed in the Dutch Renaissance style. The exterior consists of two and three storeys, with a west front that has a 2:12:2 bay arrangement. The projecting end bays and the central three bays showcase elaborate Dutch gables, with the centre bay featuring a moulded terracotta panel inscribed with the date 1895, along with a carved head in a medallion below. The ground floor has tall segmental arch windows with keystones and panelled aprons, while the outer bays have hood moulds. There are moulded stone string courses, tall round-arch second-floor windows with keystones, moulded cill courses, and panelled aprons. The large sashes have glazing bars in the top sash and fanlights above the centre windows.

On the north and south sides, there are central recessed gables with similar tall sashes, and the projecting flanking wings feature stone portals on the north side and moulded brick portals on the south side. The east elevation mirrors the west but has plainer gables.

Inside, the first-floor classrooms are open to elaborate roof trusses, although some classrooms have had suspended ceilings and partitions added.
