Description

24-27 Taunton Street is a terrace of four houses built between 1853 and 1854 for the Great Western Railway. The houses are constructed from ashlar limestone set in black mortar and feature a slate roof with ashlar stacks. Each house has two bays and is two rooms deep, with a side through passage. The entrance includes 20-pane glazed doors set in chamfered surrounds, accessed by one step. The windows are four-pane sashes, also with chamfered surrounds. The properties underwent extensive renovation around 1974. This terrace is part of a village designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to accommodate the workforce for the Great Western Railway, with construction starting in 1842 and most buildings completed by 1855. The village is noted for being one of Britain's best-preserved and architecturally ambitious railway settlements.
