Description

The Armstrong monument, located in the south-west corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Mark, was erected in 1877 to commemorate Joseph Armstrong. It was later inscribed to honor his wife, Sarah, their children, George and Joseph, and John Burdon.

This monument is made of polished pink granite and takes the form of an obelisk with a shaped foot featuring Greek key carving. It sits atop a slightly tapering plinth that has a moulded cornice and base, resting on a square granite platform. The inscriptions are carved in relief on the faces of the plinth within shaped recessed fields. The main inscription on the southern face reads: "IN LOVING / MEMORY OF / JOSEPH ARMSTRONG / WHO DIED JUNE 5th 1877 / AGED 60." Additional inscriptions on the other faces commemorate Sarah, George, and Joseph Armstrong, as well as John Burdon.
