Description

This is a K6 telephone kiosk, standardised in design and constructed of cast iron, painted red with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied crowns are present on the top panels, and the kiosk displays rectangular white signs reading "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof. The internal equipment has been modernised; the windows and display signs are intact, and the kiosk appeared to be in good condition in 2009.

The K6 telephone kiosk was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. It developed from his earlier, Neo-classical K2 telephone kiosk design of 1924 and was more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to mass produce. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were eventually produced, many being replaced in the 1960s.

The kiosk is situated adjacent to the village post office, at the centre of the village. Approximately 20 metres to the south is 16 The Street (Grade II), and approximately 25 metres to the east stands 24 The Street, also listed at Grade II. It forms a strong visual relationship with these two listed buildings and, as a representative example within a village setting, is recognised as an important 20th-century industrial design.
