Description

This is an 18th-century row of buildings situated on the south side of High Street. It comprises two cottages and several others, built using a mix of lias and pennant-stone rubble. The cottages have single-pitched pantile roofs, while the others have mansard roofs. Each building generally has two windows. The windows are 2-light casements with plain chamfered stone mullions; the ground floor windows of the first two cottages have thin cornices, and there is a continuous weathered string above three plain chamfered door openings. The features appear restored, although the windows in the buildings numbered 158 and 162 are modern casements. It is believed the row was constructed around 1767. The buildings with mansard roofs were formerly a poor house and a pin factory, while the two cottages on the east end were once the village constable's house and lock-up.
