Description

Frere Almshouses, built in 1859, is a one and a half storey building designed in a free Gothic style. It is constructed from pennant stone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. The slate roof has projecting eaves and is adorned with five gables; the outer gables are made of full-height bricks, while the three central gables sit above first floor windows, with the middle one being slightly taller. The building has two and five-light casement windows, which are topped with shouldered lintels and dripmoulds beneath relieving arches. A verandah runs across the ground floor to provide shelter for the doorways. The windows are decorated with carved scrolls that include texts, and there is a shield and additional scrolls above the central window. The head of the central first floor window features the inscribed punning motto "Frere Ayme Frere," and similar mottos can be found on the lintels of the doorways.
