Description

The Brown monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 4 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St James the Great. It dates from the 18th century and is made of sandstone. The tomb features a flat top with a moulded edge and a moulded base. It has corner pilasters adorned with a triglyph and rosette frieze on the east and west sides. There are paired inscription panels on the north and south, with foliage on the north panel, and a central skull, cherubs, and symbols of the second coming on the south panel. Additionally, there is a shield on the west side and a draped curtain over the panel on the east side. The monument commemorates Anthony Brown, who died in 1749, along with other family members.
