Description
The monument to Lord Robert Edward Somerset, built in 1846 by Lewis Vulliamy, is a Grade II* listed structure located in Hawkesbury Upton. It is made of ashlar and features a slightly tapering square tower that rises to approximately 100 feet. The sides of the tower are shallowly panelled, with armorial bearings displayed on the south-west side. The platform of the monument is supported by stone brackets and is enclosed by a portcullis (for Beaufort) and a chain railing. The top of the monument is open and includes two semi-circular headed lights on each side, an impost band, a modillioned cornice, and elaborate strapwork that gives it a Chinese style appearance, all topped with a cross on an orb. There is an entrance on the north-east side, featuring a door case with a pediment. The tower is set upon a plinth that is surrounded by low coped walls. Lord Robert Edward Henry Somerset was a general at the Battle of Waterloo and passed away in 1842.
