Description
The Hathway monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 3 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St. James the Great. It dates from the 18th century and is made of limestone. The tomb features a flat top with a moulded edge and a moulded base, with inscriptions on all sides. The south panel has fallen away, while the north panel has a reeded edge. It commemorates Thomas Hathway, who died in 1789, along with other family members. At the time of the survey in October 1984, the monument was noted to be in poor condition. This monument is one of a pair dedicated to the Hathway family, with the other located about 3 metres to the south-west.
