Description

The Old Chapel is a Congregational Church built in 1865, currently used as a storage building. It features rubble construction with stone dressings and slate roofs that have raised coped verges and kneelers. The design is in the Neo-Norman style and includes a three-bay nave, a southeast turret, and an east porch. The nave has two round-headed windows with chevron carving at the heads and an ashlar surround. The octagonal turret has prominent quoins, round-headed slit windows, and an embattled parapet. The porch has a round-headed opening with chevrons carved at the soffit of the arch, jamb shafts on plain pedestals with scalloped capitals, a string course above the capitals, round-headed side lights, and a plank door with decorative strap hinges. There is a very worn name stone in the gable with a roll finial. The south elevation of the nave features a large circular window with splayed glazing bars, while the north elevation has a door and a four-pane window in a chamfered ashlar surround, along with a round-headed lancet in the gable. The building has a plinth and quoins. The west elevation and interior were not accessible, and the chapel was noted to be in poor condition at the time of the survey in August 1984, with parts overgrown with ivy.
