Description
The Hathway monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 6 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St. James the Great. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of limestone. The tomb features a flat top with a moulded edge and a moulded base, supported by plain quarter balusters. Inscriptions are present on all sides, with paired inscriptions on the north and south sides. The south side includes the verse: "By a fierce blow my thread of life was broke ...". This monument commemorates William Hathway, who died in 1814, along with other members of the Hathway family. It is one of a pair of monuments dedicated to the Hathway family, with the other located about 3 metres northeast.
