Description
This is a planned terrace of twelve houses, numbered 34 to 42, located on the north side of North Road East in Plymouth. Built in the mid-19th century, the terrace is constructed of stucco, with stucco detailing. The roofs are covered in dry slate or asbestos slate, hidden behind a parapet featuring a moulded cornice. Stuccoed chimney stacks mark the ends of the terrace. The houses are arranged in pairs, mirroring each other, and each pair has a shared, paired entrance. Each house has a double-depth plan and a single room at the front. The terrace is three storeys high, with each house featuring a two-window range. The original windows are hornless sashes with glazing bars, and most retain their original panelled doors. Each doorway incorporates an overlight. The stucco detailing is notable for rustication on the segmental-arched ground-floor window openings, pilastered doorways with a moulded entablature, moulded sill strings, and moulded eared architraves to the upper floors. The first-floor architraves include pulvinated friezes and hoods above the windows. The interiors have not been inspected but are thought to contain features of architectural interest. The terrace is part of a significant group and was shown on a map dated 1867.
