Description

This is a terrace of houses built around 1815 by John Foulston as part of a planned square. The fronts of numbers 23 and 24 were rebuilt after damage during the Second World War. The houses are faced with incised stucco or render, with decorative bands below the windows. The roofs are dry slate, except for number 28 which has asbestos slate. Projecting eaves and stuccoed stacks over cross walls are present. Each pair of houses has a three-bay, pedimented projection for the entrance hall, with blind central bays in between. The regular arrangement includes a two-window range between each projection, plus a single-window range at the far left and right. Many original sash windows remain, with glazing bars; numbers 19 and 20 have reproduction sash windows with horns. The ground floor has round-arched openings with moulded arches linked by an impost string. Some original ground-floor windows retain spoked fanlight heads and margin panes. Most doorways have spoked fanlights, and numbers 23 to 28 have original flush-panelled doors. The interiors have not been inspected, but are likely to be of interest. The terrace forms part of a rare, virtually complete planned group of buildings by Foulston.
